(a)Summary

  • AYA SAKAI is Professor in the Department of Urban Study at Tokyo City University. She was previously Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and City Planning at Hokkaido University (2007-2015). She received her PhD from University of London in 2005, and her Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University in 1996. As visiting researcher, she has spent a year in Oxford (1998-1999) and half a year in University of California, Los Angeles (2001-2002), with funding supports from each institution. With her architect qualification (qualification number:245754), she has various practical experiences in architecture at Japan Railway Company in Tokyo (1989-1993) and then landscape architecture at Sasaki Associates in Boston (1996-1998).
    She is author of forty-five refereed articles in international journals, six book chapters, four major research papers. Her PhD thesis is awarded by City Planning Institute of Japan in 2006. She has also published widely in practitioner journals and outlets. Her main research specialisms include:
