Environmental and Information Studies
Fields of Study
Master's Program
Environmental Management Field
In this field, the Course provides education and research opportunities on environmental policies including their international perspectives production/consumption style with consideration for nature and regional environmental conservation, environmental management in relation to business administration, and optimization of corporate management.
Communication Environment Field
In this field, the Course provides education and research opportunities on methods that facilitate communication using mass media and computers in modern society from a social scientific perspective, such as sociology, cultural anthropology, and cognitive science.
Information System Field
In this field, the Course provides education and research opportunities in the fundamental technologies of information and telecommunication, which is rapidly developing in modern society, especially user interfaces, from a social scientific and engineering perspective.
Regional/Urban Environment Field
In this field, the Course provides education and research opportunities with a focus on the conservation and restoration of ecosystems in and around buildings, cities, and the surrounding regional environments from the perspective of biology, architectural environment studies, environmental design, and urban engineering.
Doctoral Program
Environment Field
Students conduct research on the conservation of the natural environment, lifestyles of urban citizens, city development, and development of living environment focusing on scales from the building environment to the urban and regional environments with the goal of realizing a sustainable and rich society.
Information Field
Aiming for user centric technology development students conduct research from the engineering and social scientific perspectives to develop solutions for addressing issues that will contribute to the harmonized development of information and communication technologies and human society.
Educational Goals and Outcomes
Students in the Graduate School are advised by professors from the relevant discipline and acquire the ability as researchers through direct or indirect involvement in research activities. Intensive education through daily personal interaction with teaching staff is a characteristic of the education at the graduate level. Thirty-nine full-time instructors are allocated to the quota of 40 students in the master's program and eight instructors to six students in the doctoral program.
The Graduate School makes every effort to enhance education with an emphasis on processes. We consider it very important that graduate students convey their ideas to other people. During the master's program, each student has an opportunity to give two presentations in English in the middle and the latter half of the first year, a poster session in Japanese or English at the beginning of the second year, and an interim presentation of the master's thesis in Japanese a half year later to be prepared for the presentation of the thesis at the end of the course.
In the process of compiling the master's thesis, students experience a part of the leading-edge research activities regarding the environment and information, sophisticate logical and constructional abilities, and enhance the power of expression. The School also recommends making a presentation at a relevant academic conference. In this way, students acquire the aforementioned abilities and strengths, which are required for any position in society through substantial research on the environment and information.
Admission Policy
Master's Program
Invited Personality
The Master’s Program of Environmental and Information division seeks students with the following skills who are interested in the four fields such as “Environmental Management”, “Communication Environment”, “Information System”, and “Regional/Urban Environment”.
- Basic knowledge at the level of graduation with a bachelor’s degree that is required of a researcher to undertake studies in the chosen field (However, it is not necessarily required to have taken environmental-and information-related classes.)
- Language skills to participate in lectures and conduct research on a global scale
- Specific awareness of environmental- and information-related issues and the skill to explain the issues to others
In seeking such students, we carry out admission examinations, including written exams and interviews, for the General Admission examination. We also provide Screening for working adults (requiring two years of work experience), and Special Screening for international students (application document must be created after a consultation about language used in education before an application is submitted), which waives the written exam.
